Traveling Waves and Power Waves

چکیده

M icrowave equivalent-circuit theory is like a grand old building: elegant, carefully crafted, passed from generation to generation, and rooted in history. Traveling waves, the measureable electromagnetic field solutions of Maxwell’s equations in a transmission line, form the foundation of the theory. You must descend into the basement to see them; not many people do so. It is in this “basement” that I have had the privilege of working on the foundations of the microwave circuit theory with Roger Marks, Bradley Alpert, and others. Together, we explored the underpinnings of the theory and worked toward building a better understanding of microwave equivalent-circuit theory and how it can be applied to the lossy printed transmission lines ubiquitous in modern microwave electronics. The first floor of this grand old structure houses the retail establishments. Clean, neat, and welcoming, here you find the equivalent-circuit voltages and currents of the theory. These voltages and currents are hot items; a steady stream of clients happily snap them up. They mimic low-frequency voltages and currents in lossless transmission lines so well that most clients are not able to distinguish the real article from the microwave equivalent. On the second floor of the building, you find the commodities exchange and business offices populated by the pseudowaves. The pseudowaves can also be referred to as “power-normalized and impedancetransformed scattering waves.” They are all about commerce. Pseudowaves do the buying, selling, and converting, making sure that the equivalent-circuit voltages and currents get into the hands of customers who need them. Pseudowaves mimic traveling waves in a lossless transmission line. Atop the building, there is a 1960s-style addition that raises the ire of the Historical Society, but is seen as a sign of progress by the young architects of the town. The power waves live here. But we get ahead of ourselves. To understand power waves, we have to understand the microwave circuit theory that lies underneath. So let us take a short visitor’s tour of this edifice. If you opt for a more in-depth tour later, [1]–[3] outline conventional microwave circuit theory. I suggest that you then look through [4] and [5] to find out more about how the theory can address lossy printed transmission Dylan Williams

Traveling Waves of Some Symmetric Planar Flows of Non-Newtonian Fluids

We present some variants of Burgers-type equations for incompressible and isothermal planar flow of viscous non-Newtonian fluids based on the Cross, the Carreau and the power-law rheology models, and on a symmetry assumption on the flow. We numerically solve the associated traveling wave equations by using industrial data and in order to validate the models we prove existence and uniqueness of ...

A New Fast and Accurate Fault Location and Classification Method on MTDC Microgrids Using Current Injection Technique, Traveling-Waves, Online Wavelet, and Mathematical Morphology

In this paper, a new fast and accurate method for fault detection, location, and classification on multi-terminal DC (MTDC) distribution networks connected to renewable energy and energy storages presented. MTDC networks develop due to some issues such as DC resources and loads expanding, and try to the power quality increasing. It is important to recognize the fault type and location in order ...

Some traveling wave solutions of soliton family

Solitons are ubiquitous and exist in almost every area from sky to bottom. For solitons to appear, the relevant equation of motion must be nonlinear. In the present study, we deal with the Korteweg-deVries (KdV), Modied Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) and Regularised LongWave (RLW) equations using Homotopy Perturbation method (HPM). The algorithm makes use of the HPM to determine the initial expansion...

Fault location and classification in non-homogeneous transmission line utilizing breaker transients

In this paper, a single-ended fault location method is presented based on a circuit breaker operation using the frequencies of traveling waves. The proposed method receives the required data from voltage traveling waves with the aid of Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and Wavelet Transform. Then, the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) identifies fault type and determines its location. In order to eval...

Effects of shear and bulk viscosity on head-on collision of localized waves in high density compact stars

Head on collision of localized waves in cold and dense hadronic matter with and without shear and bulk viscosities is investigated. Non-relativistic dynamics of propagating waves is studied using the hydrodynamics description of the system and suitable equation of state. It will be shown that the localized waves are described by solutions of the Burgers equation. Simulations show that the propa...

Transmission of dipole radiation through interfaces and the phenomenon of anti-critical angles.

Radiation emitted by an electric dipole consists of traveling and evanescent plane waves. Usually, only the traveling waves are observable by a measurement in the far field, since the evanescent waves die out over a length of approximately a wavelength from the source. We show that when the radiation is passed through an interface with a medium with an index of refraction larger than the index ...
